We’re so excited have recently employed the lovely Sofia as our Mental Health & Wellbeing Officer at GetStaffedUK!
Sofia has joined the GetStaffedUK team to address and combat the existing presence of mental health struggles within the hospitality industry, offering support both from a preventative and ongoing problem perspective. Our goal is to shake up the hospitality industry and this is just another way which we’re fighting the problems which exist including staff reliability, quality and turnover.
Often hospitality workers are under high pressure, working long, unsociable hours with often low levels of pay. On top of all this, there are the physical challenges the industry prevents, all of which can lead to a decline in our wellbeing- both physically and mentally. Mental health issues are not unique to our industry, but there are influencial factors: alcohol, dealing with the public, which can be very stressful, and the social aspects.
Therefore, here at GetStaffedUK, we aim to create an open and compassionate culture whereby talking about and working through mental health struggles becomes a part of each working day. We’re keen to show the hospitality industry that with support and guidance, we can make the hospitality industry a better place, for those new to the challenge or those more accustomed, no matter what age.
Sofia started her work with the team in recent weeks, and her first workshop started off with an introduction as to what mental health is, who it may affect, and how we can manage it. We then went in to different aspects from a management point of view, such as spotting the signs, engaging with newcomers, incorporating “mental health champions” here at GetStaffedUK and encouraging an open culture. We spoke about prevention, intervention and protection, which covered different areas we can learn about and how we can help ourselves as well as other staff members.
Going forward, we are now holding group weekly sessions which will provide us with training to help us with the topics mentioned above plus many more. In the coming sessions, we will start to cover more techniques which we can use to look after our own mental health and pass on to other people, from how to balance our many occupations, understanding our emotions, problem solving, lifestyle factor influences and so much more.
Sofia is also accessible for staff via email and 1:1 sessions, as it is understood that these means of communication may be more comfortable for some people. Ultimately, Sofia is here to guide our staff to becoming the very best versions of themselves.
We had a quick catch up with Sofia, and here’s what she had to say!
Sofia, tell us a bit about yourself:
I’m 22 and from Preston although I’m half Greek (great for holidays!). I studied Psychology at Uni which inspired me to take the Clinical Psychology route. I have vast experience across many mental health settings and have been fortunate enough to work with and learn from people of all ages with many varying mental health conditions. I am so excited to explore and develop my potential further, and work on building a career based around improving and making a difference to the lives of others.
What brought you to GetStaffedUK?
I have watched GetStaffedUK grow as a company from a distance over social media, as well as being fortunate enough to work with some staff members in my previous job. What motivated me to want to join the team was the enthusiasm and attitude of the staff members, as well as the genuine care and compassion the senior management project to their workforce.
What are you most looking forward to with your new role?
Mental health is something every person on the planet has, and something we all experience dips in across our lifetime. My aim is to break the existing stigmas around mental health and to help GetStaffedUK to lead the industry in breaking the cycle of the reproduction of poor mental health in hospitality. I will be helping the team to understand more about mental health and wellbeing, whilst providing them with the means to make positive changes to their lives. What I am most looking forward to is watching the team develop and fulfil their potential, not just in their job role but in their lives outside of work too.
